This course was developed to update clinicians with experience with the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) and the Skilled Nursing Facility Prospective Payment System (SNF PPS). Because regulatory changes occur frequently, this course is designed to add to the knowledge base of clinicians involved in these processes to assist them to perform an accurate resident assessment as mandated under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA ’87). The focus of this course is the assessment and management of nutrition and hydration in the long-term care setting, including the care of the resident receiving parenteral or enteral nutrition. The intent of the training manual is to provide basic information regarding criteria for adequate nutrition and risk factors for malnutrition and dehydration, and to provide suggestions for the management of nutrition-related problems. The assessment process outlined in the manual addresses the key components of the RAP review. Finally, the reader is taken through the quality indicator and survey processes as they relate to assessment of nutrition and hydration.

The focus of this course is on the role of medications in the RAI process, including completion of the MDS
for medications; medication-related problems in the long-term care environment; medications and the resident

CMS STRIVE Data Monitor (CEU's - 8)
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sponsored Staff Time Intensity Verification (STRIVE) project is a year long national series of staff time studies designed to update the current RUG III case mix indices, insure the prospective payment considers current best practices of nursing facilities, and assist in other CMS policy decisions. The STRIVE study is being conducted by the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care (IFMC) as the prime contractor. CMS is partnering with volunteer states to conduct the time studies for the benefit of Medicare beneficiaries, providers, CMS and the state Medicaid programs.
