The MDS Education/RAC-CTTM Certification Program

Our course materials are written by the foremost national leaders in RAI/MDS policy and coding and are reviewed by national experts in: clinical assessment, completion of the RAI/MDS, and the regulatory process surrounding RAI/MDS completion. The correspondence and online courses are self-paced, convenient and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our Partner Training Workshops are taught by some of the most knowledgeable and dynamic instructors in the country. Our Master Teachers must meet strict criteria in order to qualify and be approved to teach the AANAC program.

Who is the Program for:

The AANAC RAC-CT Certification is intended for individuals with at least 6 months work experience or equivalent in the RAI/MDS process. Though there is not a work experience requirement, it is highly recommended that individuals with less experience should complete "MDS 101: A Course for Beginners" before enrolling in the certification program; this course will count as one of the 3.

AANAC is committed to an interdisciplinary team approach to resident care. Therefore, this program is specifically written for all members of the Interdisciplinary Team involved in the resident assessment and care planning process including: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nurse Assessment Coordinators, Administrators, Billing Professionals, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Social Workers, Health Information Professionals, Activities Professionals, and Dieticians.

Here's How the Certification Program Works:

To be eligible for the AANAC Certificate Program the individual must:
  • Be a clinician/professional involved in the completion of the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI/MDS) in the long term care field.
  • Complete ten AANAC training courses.
  • Seven of the ten courses must be the core curriculum which consists of:
    • Coding
    • OBRA- Timing and Scheduling for the MDS 2.0
    • PPS- Timing and Scheduling for the MDS 2.0
    • Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPs) and the MDS 2.0
    • Care Planning and the MDS 2.0
    • Resource Utilization Groups III (RUGs) and the MDS 2.0
    • Billing and the MDS 2.0 for Clinicians
  • In addition to completion of the seven core courses, complete a total of three courses of their choosing, either on-line or by correspondence course.
  • Pass the final exam for each courses with a score of 80% or better. The individual is allowed three attempts to pass the final exam. If the individual does not pass the final exam on his first attempt, he will have three months from the date of purchase of the course to take the final exam and pass it.

Once you have completed the necessary requirements for the program, AANAC will mail your Certificate of Completion and RAC-CTTM (Resident Assessment Coordinator-CertifiedTM) pin within 14 business days. Please take a moment to make sure we have the correct mailing address on file so as not to delay receiving your materials.

Educational Credit:

AANAC is approved as a provider of Continuing Education in nursing by the Colorado Nurses Association which is accredited as an approved Association of Continuing Education in Nursing by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

When the individual passes with a score of 80% or better, he will be notified of this, receive contact hours for the course, and be entered into the AANAC National Database for the Certificate Program. Participants will be notified of their grade within 2-3 weeks upon receipt of the final exam in the AANAC office.
